January 24 to January 29Afro Modern: Journeys Through the Black AtlanticThis major new exhibition traces the impact of different black cultures from around the Atlantic on art from the early 20th century to today, including the influence of African art on Picasso's Modernism.
January 29 to April 25 Up Helly AaEurope's largest fire festival takes place in Lerwick on the Shetland Islands, culminating in the spectacular ritual burning of a Viking galley. Accommodation is nigh impossible to find, however, unless you hire a camper van or stay in the far reaches of the Shetlands.
January 26 Dinosaurs UnleashedBilled as "the family day out that London's been waiting 65 million years for", this new exhibition on Oxford Street needs little help selling itself – but with 24 full-sized animatronic dinosaurs, including the Tyrannosaurus rex, it might well live up to the hype.
January 28 to April 30 Salisbury WinterfestThis small seasonal ales and cider festival, held by the local branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra), still has tickets available for evening tastings.
January 29-30 Chris OfiliA retrospective of the artist’s career with more than 45 paintings, as well as pencil drawings and watercolours from the mid 1990s to today. Ofili won the Turner Prize in 1998 and represented Great Britain at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003.
January 27-May 16 TVHow earth made usIain Stewart goes to some exotic locations, including a Cambodian lake and the world's rainiest region, to explain how the water cycle works. Tuesday January 26, 9-10pm, BBC2 Last chance to…See the works of J M W Turner alongside the art of, among others, Rembrandt, Rubens and Constable in the Turner and the Masters exhibition (until January 31), which explores Turner's reaction to – and rivalry with – other artists.
